The team’s plan all along was for Val to have a second life helping someone who needs help. If she had made the run without mechanical problems, she would have gone to a family we know that desperately needs a reliable, inexpensive car but can’t afford one. The backup plan was for Val to go to an organization that would repair her, sell her to someone who would drive her, and use the proceeds to support their charitable work. That plan came crashing to a halt when we learned that, given the age, condition and size of the car, that organization probably would send Val to the crusher for her salvage value… Watch the video below to find out about Val’s loving new home and exciting future.

Our Valiant steed Val has found a new home in New Orleans (more about this later.) We are using a rental Pony from Hertz, and are so convinced it (an the store we rented from) is such a piece of crap that it is destined as a future BABE contender, we have pre-badged it! Look for us on the road.

Val (somehow) made it to New Orleans despite an injury that would have left lesser cars dead by the side of the road – a busted water jacket or a cracked block, the team still isn’t certain which.  As always, the end of the rally is celebrated with a party of epic proportions, but Crash and Burn wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the end of the day and of the rally with a quick video update. Additional videos, more details about the day, a fundraising update and details about Val’s future all will be forthcoming shortly.

We have drained and replaced the oil, flushed and refilled the radiator. We have used additives – Marvel Mystery Oil and Sea Foam to de-gunk as best we can.

Bottom line: we are running for the finish line as fast as we can. Every mile we get by is more money for the charities we are supporting and, who knows? Burn ran his 78 Dodge Aspen with less than a quart of oil for a month in college. Perhaps Val’s Leaning Tower of Power will see us through. Either way, its going to be a heck of a run.

We will stop to flush and fill every 100 miles Val gets us, and have no thermostat in and the radiator cap at the second notch. We are very open to additional advice. We will not be able to check here for responses, so please reach us via Twitter, we are @THOTC and can get messages that way instantly.

We have total block breach evidenced by the entire can of stop leak put in the radiator being in the oil pan within minutes. The engine may have 5 miles or 440 left in it and we are going to find out. This is the BABE Rally, after all.

Plan B… We are working on it. Stay tuned.

One additional team running the rally to raise money for charity didn’t make it into the video last night as they did the responsible thing and went to bed early. Team Daewhoopdiedoo is raising money for the Methodist Temple Children’s Center in Evansville, Indiana.

Forecast for the entire region, along all three potential routes for the drive today suggest the same thing… HOT!  92 degrees by noon with no relief from the heat expected until well after sundown. Except, of course, for the small potential for thunderstorms that bring slightly cooler temperatures and significantly harder driving.

Better than last year, when the temperature in Gadsden, AL hit 100 degrees before the starting horn and tires began de-laminating.

New Orleans, here we come!

More wrenching on Val, followed by a unique challenge requiring competitors to locate and duplicate twenty postage stamp-sized, gritty black-and-white photos taken months previously by the Rally’s organizers. The team is beyond tired, but excited about the final run to the finish line 440 miles away in New Orleans tomorrow.

Please follow the team’s adventures at http://www.thotc.com/ and be sure to pledge your support for two great charities for whom the team is rallying: American Diabetes Association and March of Dimes.

In the spirit of 24 Hours of Lemons, and at the prompting of our most excellent… well, to call them “helpers” would do them a serious injustice, Val got a new badge of Honor. Love using a car part for a stencil!
